Madeira launches international campaign in London

The new international Madeira Tourism campaign, "Madeira as Beautiful as Ever", was recently launched in London. It is a tactical campaign that aims to show that the island's natural beauty and the kindness and spirit of the Madeiran people remain intact.

This forms part of the promotional campaign for the tourist destination and has been adapted into a variety of languages for the principal tourist markets of interest to the regional economy, namely Austria, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Finland, France, Norway, the United Kingdom, Sweden and Switzerland. The campaign will make use of a variety of media such as television, radio, cinema, the press, the Internet, and billboards.

Consequently, the images of this campaign will be visible in 580 panels distributed throughout the London Underground, as well as in a 30-second television advert to be broadcast on Sky News and the Travel Channel, among other mediums. In this advert the people of Madeira express, with an "Obrigado", their gratitude to the visitors from around the world for continuing to visit the Madeira Islands, as this is the best way for them to help the destination.

The campaign was produced entirely free of charge by the Youmix communications agency and the advert was produced by Trix Film and directed by Gideon Nel, with graphic and audio production support from Smiling and Frog Animation. The photographer Henrique Seruca accompanied the filming of the advert and provided the images for billboards and the press.

Madeira

Following flash floods and mud slides during Friday night and Saturday morning on the island of Madeira, the islanders have been working round the clock to get back to normal. As at Monday 22 February, all Classic Collection Holidays’ hotels are unaffected, the road to the airport is clear, and Funchal Airport is functioning normally, although work is continuing in central Funchal to clear the areas affected.

We are pleased to confirm that all our customers in Madeira are continuing with their holidays. The Foreign Office advice for travel to Madeira suggests that holiday makers contact their airline or travel company and, in this regard, we are pleased to confirm that future holiday arrangements to the island are unaffected. However, if you wish to contact us about your holiday to Madeira, or if you are concerned about a family member currently on holiday with us, please don’t hesitate to call on freephone 0800 008 7299.

We enjoy a long established relationship with Madeira and offer our sympathies to those who have been affected by the events over the weekend. We will do all we can to help our hoteliers and friends on this beautiful island as they work to ensure normality as soon as possible. In this regard, we have pledged a substantial donation towards a recovery fund and will continue to encourage customers to book Madeira as we know and love the island and understand the importance that tourism plays in its economy.

Madeira - Official Statements

Official Statement of the Regional Secretariat of Tourism and Transports -22/02/2010

"- The hotel industry of Madeira was not affected by the storms of the past Saturday, February 20th, and maintains all operating conditions safely. Hotel establishments, in general, are operational and, according to contacts made today by the SRTT, there were not reported any difficulties or problems.
- The Madeira International Airport is operational.
- According to the Portuguese Institute of Meteorology, weather forecasts are favourable for the next 24 hours, which will facilitate all the cleaning and removal of debris yet registered.
- The main concern and priority of the regional authorities currently is to support the people and the replacement of all the land accessibilities safely and to the most remote locations. The cleaning and restoration works are taking place at an accelerated pace, with two of the three rivers that overflowed in Funchal already running in their normal bed.
- The port of Funchal is operational.
- The public transport links are being gradually restored in and around Funchal. The municipalities of the eastern part of the island were always accessible and there are now only some difficulties with access to the municipalities of Ribeira Brava and Ponta do Sol.
- Bearing in mind an average occupancy rate of around 55%, Madeira had last weekend about 17,000 tourists, of which we mourn the death of a British tourist.
- To facilitate reporting tools, the Regional Government of Madeira is to provide official information on the situation through press conferences, held twice a day, one at 12 o’clock and another at 18:30, until the situation is considered outdated and standardized, which is expected as soon as possible. These official statements will be released through the official website of the Madeira Tourist Board (www.madeiraislands.travel)"

Official Report from Regional Government of Madeira - 22/02/2010

" (...) Tourists Situation:
- The hotels are operating normaly.
- The calendar of events will be maintained and we are already preparing the Flower Festival that will occur from 15th until 18th of April. So please do come to Madeira, enjoy your stay and celebrate with us. (...)"

Madeira needs your support more than ever now

Following the devastating floods over the weekend in Madeira, Dino Toouli Sales & Marketing Manager of Atlantic Holidays made the following plea to the travel trade not to stop supporting tourism to the island: “The floods were due to the unprecedented amount of rain fall over the past few days. As many will know Madeira heavily relies on tourism for its economy and the last thing we want now is for people to stop visiting the island. Today’s flights to Madeira operated as normal and all the hotels we feature have not been affected by the floods”

To help stimulate the market, Atlantic Holidays has reduced the prices of many of its holiday’s in the coming weeks with savings of up to £189 per person.
The 5* Quinta das Vistas has reduced it prices by £150 per person leading in at £619 for departures in March.
The 5* Pestana Carlton Madeira is offering all arrivals until 3oth June a FREE upgrade to sea view with savings of up to £186.50 for arrivals in March.
The 3* Estrelicia Hotel is offering FREE HB for all arrivals until 22nd March, saving up to £189 per person.

Toouli added “it is vital we continue to promote the beautiful Portuguese island of Madeira and help re build the economy that the islanders heavily rely on.

TAP and Sata expand code-share agreement

TAP and Sata have stepped up their commercial cooperation by expanding their joint offer in new markets, with the same objective in mind: to promote the Azores and increase tourist flows to the region.

Through a proactive code-share policy, SATA and TAP have sought to capitalize on synergies by combining the flight networks of these domestic companies. With the code-share agreement, passenger trips with multiple flights are easier, since passengers can buy continuous tickets – as a rule with one convenient traveller and baggage check-in – regardless of the number of flights.

Similarly, code sharing extends the flight sales network to the networks of both companies. Following this economic and sales rationale, code-share agreements have been put in place to offer SATA flights throughout TAP’s sales network, since SATA flights are also sold with the TAP code.

Villa Plus unveils a fresh new rebrand

This week sees the independent direct-sell villa specialist Villa Plus rebrand itself with a new modern look, demonstrated by a vibrant and uplifting new colourful logo.

Villa Plus has been providing great value, quality villa holidays for 23 years and was the pioneer in improving the standard of European villa holidays. And is today one of the travel industry's few true independent operators and is still owned and managed by Nick Cooper and his business partner Raj Mavani.

Villa Plus's long standing in the overseas villa market has enabled it to cherry-pick the very best villas in the very best locations. The operator now has over 700 exclusively contracted villas, all with swimming pools and inclusive maid and linen service across nine popular destinations in Spain, Portugal, Cyprus and Greece.

As part of the re-brand Villa Plus will also adopt a new tag line: 'Villa holidays with a difference', to reinforce the fact that its villas come with many extras as standard and are among the best equipped rental villas in Europe.

Come to Madeira!

Are you looking for the ideal place to replenish your energies, look after your body and get ready for another year of work? In Portugal, we have the perfect destination for you… the archipelago of Madeira!

Set in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, Madeira has features that are as healthy as they are natural. Its seawater, the scent of its flowers, its subtropical climate and exotic vegetation, all make this archipelago a genuinely natural spa!

In order to really discover this paradise, you should climb to the top of the Pico do Areeiro and the Pico de Ruivo and take in the sheer beauty of the island’s landscape. Enjoy also the natural beauty of the Laurissilva Forest, recognised by UNESCO as a natural world heritage site, or go for a walk along one of the "levadas". Refresh yourself in one of the naturally formed swimming-pools at Porto Moniz and delight in the magnificent aerial views you can enjoy from a cable car, helicopter, or even a hot-air balloon.

But, if you’re a golf lover, Madeira has greens that are suited to players of all handicaps. For those who are more romantic, we suggest sailing along the coast or taking a stroll through the island’s capital, Funchal. Walk around the streets of this city with over 500 years of history and choose what you would like to take away with you. How about some embroideries or a bottle of Madeira wine?

Rest for a while on a café terrace or in a restaurant overlooking the sea and savour the delights of the Madeiran cuisine. And enjoy the fun! Madeira has a whole range of different shows, festivals and exhibitions just waiting for you! Finally, enjoy a well-deserved rest in one of the island’s several luxury hotels or at one of the Quintas da Madeira.

But, to turn this into a genuine dream holiday, why not prolong your stay by popping over to the paradise island of Porto Santo and relaxing on its beach of fine, golden sand, stretching over 9 kilometres and famous for its healing properties.

What are you waiting for? Come to Portugal and visit Madeira… a destination for all seasons!
